Neighborhood
Located just two blocks away from UC Berkeley, Channing Way is always full of life. Whether day or night, there is always something to do. Close by is Telegraph Avenue, famous for its wide selection of independent stores and street vendors, which hosts its annual Telegraph Avenue Holiday Street Fair every December. In the opposite direction is Shattuck Avenue, bursting with a variety of restaurants, a collection of stores, and a selection of bars and pubs. Everything is within reach from The Channing Apartments.
The Channing Apartments is in the perfect location for any type of athlete. Just two blocks away is UC Berkeley's Recreational Sports Facility. It features an Olympic-sized swimming pool, indoor basketball courts, weight rooms, squash courts, and much, much more. Not too far away is People's Park, with outdoor basketball and volleyball courts. To add to the sports mix, a block away from the Channing Apartments are the Channing Tennis Courts, the very courts where the Cal Bears tennis team practices.
Berkeley
This easy-going suburb across the bay from San Francisco is home to the prestigious University of California at Berkeley, the incubator for the antiwar movement of the 1960s and a longtime bastion of counterculture. People's Park, where antiwar protestors once gathered, has changed, however: The university turned it into a recreational area, complete with volleyball courts, over the protests of some who wanted to keep the park as it was.
The campus itself is lovely. Among the sites of interest to visitors are the botanical garden, Sather Tower (also known as Campanile), the Earth Sciences Building and the University Art Museum. The museum's Pacific Film Archive has a 200-seat auditorium that shows selections from its collection of more than 5,000 movies, many avant-garde and experimental, as well as copies of Soviet silent movies and perhaps the largest collection of Japanese movies outside Japan.
Sports fans can rejoice in Berkeley's strong sports presence. The California Golden Bears are one of the nation's top collegiate teams in various sports. From football at Memorial Stadium to basketball at Haas Pavilion, there is always a team to root for. In addition, the Oakland Raiders, the Golden State Warriors, and the Oakland A's are just a short BART ride away.
Berkeley also boasts itself on its lively nightlife. With over 30,000 young students living within its borders the lights never go out in Berkeley. Shattuck Avenue and San Pablo Avenue are lined with diversified bars to appease any taste. Berkeley is also home to the Pyramid Brewery and Alehouse where a collection of cool, crisp beers are always on tap. The Shattuck Down Low club is always playing the newest hits as well as classic favorites.
Near campus is the Chapel of the Pacific School of Religion, which contains one of the largest stained-glass windows in the world. Along Telegraph Avenue, Berkeley's bustling main drag, streams a colorful tide of humanity, from aging hippies to frenzied students to monied suburbanites. Lining the street are bookstores, boutiques, record shops, ethnic eateries and scores of sidewalk vendors. The city's Tilden Park is enormous, with a steam train, carousel, walking trails, a golf course, a lake (with areas for swimming) and a nature center.
Berkeley has many distinct shopping districts:
College Avenue/Elmwood District
All the amenities of a comfortable neighborhood, just seven blocks south of campus, with a wide variety of gourmet restaurants, coffeehouses, unique shops, and services.
Rockridge
Farther south along College Avenue, just across the border into Oakland, action centers on the Rockridge BART station. Rockridge is a lively, trendy neighborhood—shopping is mostly upscale and restaurants range from casual to expensive.
Downtown Berkeley
Downtown is the mass-transit hub (BART station, AC Transit buses), center of civic life (main post office, city hall, convention and visitors bureau, main public library), locale of basic necessities (banks, drug stores), entertainment (Berkeley Repertory Theatre, Aurora Theater, The Jazzschool, movie houses), and diversified restaurants.
North Berkeley
Downtown Berkeley becomes the North Berkeley shopping area once you cross University Avenue. Amid an assortment of shops, bookstores, supermarkets, and pharmacies, visitors will find an abundance of dining opportunities in this famous "Gourmet Ghetto," including the world-renowned restaurant, Chez Panisse. Founded by Alice Waters, this is the storied birthplace of California Cuisine; reservations are essential. North Berkeley is also home to the annual Spice of Life Festival.
Fourth Street
People come from miles around to browse this concentrated area of mostly upscale specialty shops in west Berkeley. The festive district includes several eateries, various cafés, and many affluent clothing stores.
Solano Avenue
Hundreds of shops, restaurants, and cafés line this pleasant, one-mile stretch into Albany, with movie houses at each end. Easy parking and plentiful lighting make Solano Avenue a prime place to shop.
Telegraph Avenue
This world-famous south campus shopping area centers on about five blocks of Telegraph Avenue. Street vendors add to the eclectic, urban mix. People's Park is on Haste Street, just east of Telegraph. You'll be hard-pressed to find a better selection of CDs, records and tapes, and don't miss the area's renowned independent bookstores. There also are good, reasonably priced places to eat.
Emerybay/Emeryville
The place to go for music, books, electronics, movies—you name it, the Emerybay center has it. Visitors will find two large shopping complexes, separated by Powell Street. It's easy walking distance between the two areas.
